Kitchen island lighting

I love a kitchen island and the lighting above it can really make a statement.  It's probably one of the few kinds over-head lighting I enjoy. I think some other kinds of overhead lights, commercial lights for example, are just so unflattering especially if you stand directly underneath them. But if there's an island or a table or even a bed below to block the shadows, well--then no problemo.  The bad overhead light I'm talking about is in a lot of clothing stores. Why some stores still use overhead lighting in their dressing rooms, not to mention the harshest light bulbs is beyond me. (Would it kill them to use a pink bulb?) Don't they realize they would quadruple their sales if they changed the lighting? I was shopping with my teenage nieces the other day and I saw a vaguely familiar pout on one of their faces as she left the dressing room.  "How's it going?" I asked. "The pants are great, I just hate dressing rooms."  I hear that. They should have a suggestion box at these stores because complaining to the cashier doesn't quite cut it. (Apologies again H&M, Zara, and a few Soho stores--I had to vent.)  I would offer my design services pro-bono if they'd let me revamp all the bad lighting in dressing rooms throughout the city.  I went on to explain to my nieces that those overhead lights gave other overhead lights, like the ones in these photos a bad rap. And how dressing rooms actually use fun-house mirrors so you shouldn't take anything those mirrors throw back at you seriously.  When we got home she tried on the pants again and saw I was right...and then said; "those stores should be fined."   Now that's a great campaign. If any of you know him, call Mayor Bloomberg and let's get this party started.  Fines for stores with unflattering lights...Brilliant.
Now, here on the other hand are some gorgeous overhead lights that I can really enjoy!

These industrial lights are amazing...and how cool is that ladder?

This standard white milk glass globe is so retro--love it!

Saw these on the William's Sonoma website and thought they were dreamy!
